Where AI answers come from
AI search is not a separate world. When ChatGPT, Google's AI overviews, or other assistants recommend a local business, they pull their information from the web: search results, Google Business Profiles, reviews, and the businesses' own sites. Google has said directly that there is no separate optimization for AI features, and that the same content and the same technical health decide the outcome.
In practice this means one thing: a business that shows up well in ordinary search is also in the running for AI answers. A business that Google cannot find does not end up in either one's recommendations.
Test your own visibility
You can try this right now. Open any AI assistant and ask the same question your customer would ask: "recommend a [your service] in [your town]". Try a couple of different phrasings.
If your business is mentioned, look at what information the answer relies on, often reviews and profile details. If your business is not mentioned, the reason is almost always one of the basics covered next.
Four things that decide it
1. Your Google Business Profile is filled in completely. Category, service area, opening hours, and description are information that both search and AI quote directly.
Google Business Profile: setup and optimization step by step covers the whole profile.
2. You have reviews, and they are recent. When AI justifies a recommendation, it most often points to reviews. A steady stream of genuine reviews is the single strongest signal.
How to ask customers for Google reviews naturally covers how to do it without feeling awkward.
3. Your site says plainly what you do and where. AI reads text. "Quality solutions for your needs" tells it nothing; "HVAC installation and servicing in Oulu and the surrounding area" tells it everything. The clarity that convinces a customer is the same clarity a machine understands.
4. Your site is technically sound. A fast, mobile-friendly, indexable site is the precondition for your content becoming a source at all.
Website speed covers the technical basics.
DIGITALE
I build sites that both Google and AI can read.
Clear structure, fast technology, and content that says plainly what you do. The same foundation works for both.
What is not worth doing
A sales pitch is forming around AI visibility, the same way it once did around SEO: separate "AI optimization" packages and shortcuts. They are not worth the money. Nobody can promise a spot in an AI answer, because answers vary by who asks, how they phrase it, and when.
What does not vary: the basics. Local visibility on Google is built from the same parts, and the same work carries over to both.
Summary
AI search does not change the rules of the game, it sharpens them. The businesses that end up recommended are the ones whose details are in order, whose reviews are fresh, and whose sites are clear.
If you take care of these for the sake of ordinary search, AI visibility comes as a bonus.
